What Is It Costing You NOT To Lose Weight? Confidence

Can you tell I’m excited about this week’s post? This series on the costs of NOT losing weight has been such a great topic to teach. I have said it before and I’ll say it again: The first step in change is awareness. Once we can see what is, we have a chance to change to create what we want. Permanent weight loss begins with awareness; awareness of the situation, the desire for change, and the costs of not changing. These weeks that we’ve been looking at the costs of not changing have reminded me to go get what I want – I hope they’re doing the same for you!

 

This week we’re going to talk about the loss of confidence that comes with NOT losing the weight. I want to make a disclaimer first: I am a fan of the body positivity movement. I do NOT believe that you have to be a certain size to be confident, and I celebrate women who strut their stuff in any size body!

Your body is a gift, a temple, and it’s to be cared for and nourished, not shamed. Shame is one of the worst places from which to make a change – I never, ever teach my clients to lose weight from shame. Shame sounds like, “I shouldn’t be this big”, or “I really should get this weight off”. “Should” comes from judgment, and judgment produces shame, and shame is corrosive. It eats away at us, tears us down, makes us shrink from living this beautiful, glorious gift of life we’ve been given. Shame is not good weight loss fuel!

 

 

But what if you’ve decided that you just don’t want to be in the size body you’re in anymore? What if you’re ready to change it? Let’s look at what happens when we want to lose weight but aren’t doing it. What’s the cost in terms of confidence?

One way we figure out what we’re missing is to ask what we’d do differently in our lighter bodies. If we were at the weight we feel comfortable with, how would we show up in our lives? Would we try new things, ask for the raise, create something new?

Another idea to consider what we aren’t doing now because we feel like we can’t. What aren’t you going for because “it’s not what someone my size does”? Are you missing out on a dance class because you don’t like how you’d look in the class mirrors? What about that massage you’d love to schedule but hate the thought of getting naked and exposed for the therapist? There’s something you’re not doing because you feel hesitant to try it in the body you’re in right now. What are you missing out on?

Sometimes the shame is more insidious. There’s a mean little voice in our head that tells us, “You don’t deserve to feel good in your body. You made this body like this by being greedy and out of control, so now you get to live with it. When you decide to get yourself together and stop stuffing your face every chance you get, then you can feel better. Until then, you ought to feel like trash.” That’s the kind of judgment and shame that went through my head all the time before I lost weight. That little voice is a liar! You get to lose the weight because you want to, not because losing the weight makes you any more worthy than you are RIGHT NOW. When that’s the voice you listen to, you freeze, you wait, you don’t move ahead. That voice is crippling, and it has got to go! You get to choose what you make of this life and you don’t need any self-constructed roadblocks preventing you from creating the life you are called to live. You create the confidence to live the life you’re here to live!

What Is It Costing You NOT To Lose Weight? Opportunity

Hello again! We’re working together to count the costs of NOT losing the weight you want to lose. We’ve talked about time, money, and space so far – all things we’re spending without really being aware of it. This week, we’re going to talk about a new cost: Opportunity.

 

Before we go too far, I want to make a disclaimer: I am not about body-shaming anyone.  You can be in any size body and be happy there – in fact, it’s the best place from which to lose weight! If you are happy where you are in your body and you don’t want to change, then don’t. Societal pressures from advertisements, marketing, movies, and TV are not the reason to lose weight. Putting pressure on yourself to lose weight to fit some sort of societal ideal is just a way of shaming yourself into change. If it worked, I suppose that there would be some kind of value to it. But it doesn’t work.

But you can be loving and supportive of yourself and decide you want to change your body. It’s a choice you get to make. You can decide to lose weight as an act of self-love. You can lose weight simply because you want to. No shame here!

 

 

Let’s get back to talking about opportunity.  Those of you in business know all about “opportunity cost”. It’s when you miss out on a chance to do or create something because you choose something else. It’s the cost you pay by with the action you take (or don’t take!).

So what opportunity does it cost you NOT to lose weight?

First, let’s think about what things you aren’t doing because of your weight. Often we won’t allow ourselves to participate in certain activities because we feel too big to enjoy them. Think of any activity in a swimsuit. Kayaking, water slides, white water rafting, not to mention that we don’t want to even shop for that swimsuit! Now, you might not be into any of that anyway. But would you be more likely to consider it if you felt like your weight wouldn’t limit you, if you didn’t think you would tip the canoe or get stuck in the slide?

How about long hikes? Is your knee/hip/back pain from your weight keeping you from enjoying more activity? Can you imagine what it would feel like to be in a lighter, more mobile body? I never wanted to get on my bike because of how I imagined my backside would look from the rearview while I was riding. No bike rides with the kids for me!

 

Those are just activities. Maybe if you were thinner you wouldn’t want to do any of that anyway – it’s just not your jam. Let’s talk about the second major opportunity cost of NOT losing weight: You don’t get to enjoy living in a body that feels right to you. You deprive yourself of the experience of moving around in comfort and ease. You deny yourself the chance to get out of the heavier body that feels like it’s aging faster than you are inside. You miss out on the feeling of enjoying the clothes you wear, and even the chance to forget about them because they’re not pulling and digging and you aren’t constantly adjusting them so your body doesn’t show in an unfavorable light. You don’t get to enjoy shopping and trying on clothes, looking in the mirror with satisfaction instead of dismay.

What Is It Costing You NOT To Lose Weight? Part 3

Welcome back! It’s good to be back together here to talk about what matters to us. We’re evaluating the costs of NOT losing the weight we want to lose.  It took me a loooong time – decades, really – to get to the point where I was ready to get myself out of misery and lose the weight for good. All that time, frustrated, critical, sad, fed up, and hopeless, spent on a problem I wasn’t solving!

 

We looked at the time we’ve spent on NOT solving our weight problem last week. And I meant what I said – you haven’t wasted it. All your experiences can be used as leverage to be successful this time in getting to your goal and staying there. Now, we want to move forward and get that weight off! Counting the costs of NOT moving can help our motivation not to waste any more of our precious resources and get this thing done!

This week, we’re going to talk about money.

Sounds easy, right?

It’s more than you think.

 

First, we’ll do the easy part. This is the best way to get started and exactly how I help my clients gain momentum. We start with what’s easy to do and gain momentum before we tackle the tough stuff! So, the direct costs of NOT losing weight are all the things you’ve spent money on in the past in the name of weight loss. What powder, meal plan, pill, supplement, prepared meals have you bought to lose weight? Remember the plastic shorts to put on to work out to make you sweat more and lose weight faster? How about Slim Fast? Other meal replacement bars and such? Work out equipment? How much money would you estimate you’ve spent on solving your weight problem? That’s a real question – see if you can make an estimate!

 

 

Now – I’d have no problem with spending money on any of this if it worked. But there’s still a huge multi-billion-dollar-a-year diet/supplement/fitness industry because the products don’t work, at least not long term. Your goal isn’t to drop ten pounds to fit into a dress for an event – you want to get this weight off for good and get off the roller coaster of dieting and yo-yo-ing up and down the scale!

 

All that money you’ve spent – those are direct costs of your weight loss attempts. But there are indirect costs too. The hidden costs of NOT losing weight might be costing you even more money than you’ve spent directly. How many times have you bought clothes you didn’t really want because you had to change sizes? Ever find yourself buying stuff off of Facebook/Amazon/take your pick because you’re frustrated about your weight and you get a little boost from buying something? How much money have you spent on random stuff because you we’re in emotional pain about your weight? Can you calculate that number?

 

You get to choose how you spend your resources. Your money goes where you decide and you can use it unconsciously or intentionally. Wouldn’t it feel good to know that your money is going exactly where you want to solve what you want?

 

 

It might be that until now, you didn’t know that your barrier to permanent weight loss was your own brain. You may just have learned that the way you think needs reprogramming to get to permanent weight loss. That’s ok! You keep learning and training that brain and you will change it!

What Is It Costing You NOT To Lose Weight? Part 2

Welcome back! We’re back counting the costs of NOT moving toward our goal of permanent weight loss. Every decision we make has a cost. If we decide to redecorate our living room, we spend our money buying new furniture. If we start a workout regimen, we spend our sweat equity to move our bodies. 

 

What does it cost us NOT to move forward?

 

Seems like the cost would be pretty small. If you’re not doing anything, how pricey can it be? Turns out, the hidden costs are higher than you’d think. This week I want to focus on one of my favorite non-renewable resources:

Time.

 

Now, your time is valuable. Since we don’t live in a Back To The Future situation, we only get to go one direction in time, and that’s forward. Once time has gone, it’s not coming back. You can’t earn more time! Spending it is the price you pay for anything you do.

We don’t get going on our goal because we don’t want to waste our time working on something that might not work out. Sometimes we think that we don’t have enough time to do what we need to do to be successful. 

 

 

Neither of these statements is true.

These are just thoughts.

Let me show you.

 

If you’re like most people on the weight loss journey, you’ve invested a lot of your resources in getting to the goal. You’ve already done a lot! You’ve bought supplements and programs and workout gear, all without the success you want. You might be feeling weary and hopeless, wondering if weight loss is even possible for you. Maybe doing nothing would at least save money.

 

Even if you give up on losing weight, you’re spending your time on your weight anyway.

 

If you want to be in a different body, you’re thinking about your weight. Every time you grimace at yourself in the mirror, berating yourself for how much weight you’ve gained, you’re spending time. When you agonize over what to wear because nothing fits the way you want, you’re spending time. When you comb the web for the latest and greatest new weight loss program, you’re spending time. Even when you’re calculating the time it would take to meal prep or shop or order food on a diet plan and decide NOT to do it because you don’t have time, you’re spending time.

 

 

You have the same amount of time as everyone else. We all get the same 24 hours a day. You get to decide how you spend it!

 

Let me say this: None of the time you’ve invested so far on getting to your weight loss goal is wasted. You have learned a lot about yourself, what works and what doesn’t. You have precious intelligence gathered that you can leverage for your future success, even if you don’t know how to use it yet. You’ve spent countless hours and mental energy on this effort – you’ve been building the framework for the success you want to achieve!

Here’s my recommendation: If you’re going to spend the time on getting to your weight loss goal anyway, do it in a way that supports you through the process. Be kind, be gentle, be compassionate as you find your way. Get help if you need it! But use your precious resource of time intentionally so you can celebrate how you’ve spent it instead of fostering regret. You can choose how to spend your time!

What Is It Costing You NOT To Lose Weight?

About a month ago I walked into the call room one morning and the TV was on an infomercial for a new exercise program. As I dropped my bag and changed into my scrubs I got drawn into the offer for a stronger body in just a few minutes a day. The testimonials from happy women who’d been able to transform their bodies were compelling. I wanted to be stronger and enjoy a sweaty workout like these smiling women! I even wrote down the name of the program and signed up for the discount to be texted to me. I figured I’d think about incorporating this program into my schedule and deciding how I would pay for it later.

 

Then I went out into the hospital to see patients.

 

Yesterday, the same infomercial was on the TV when I left my bag in the call room. It reminded me that weeks had gone by and I hadn’t done anything about that program. To be fair, I had made a decision: I’d do nothing. By not signing up for the program, not making room in my schedule for an intense workout regimen, I’d decided not to create a stronger body.

 

So what? It doesn’t really matter what decision I make for my body. I can choose to lose or gain weight, exercise or not, eat foods that promote health or don’t. In the end, it’s all a choice. The real question is: What does my choice cost and am I willing to pay?

 

 

When I lost weight 15 years ago, being in a lighter body was an unbelievably wonderful feeling. Exercise wasn’t part of my process for weight loss. I needed all my focus to learn how to fuel my body differently, so exercise was not a priority. But over the years, I’ve wondered what it would be like to live in a strong, athletic body. I wasn’t an athlete as a kid, and when I was dancing in high school and college I was overweight, so I’ve never lived in a strong and light body. When I see ads for workout programs or the athletes competing in the Olympics, I envy their strength and ability.

By not doing anything with my exercise regimen, I’ve paid a price. I live in a body that isn’t as powerful as I’d like it to be. I’m missing what it would feel like to have strong arms and legs that can do more than they do now. I don’t get to experience what living in that body would feel like. Months and years are passing by without having what I could have because I haven’t decided to invest the time, energy, and money into changing my body into what I want. I’ve paid with my time.

 

 

You’re doing the same thing with your weight loss.

 

When you don’t decide to do what you can to lose weight, you decide to stay where you are. If you want to be in the body you’re in, it doesn’t cost you anything. But if you want to lose the weight and don’t, what’s it costing you? Over the next few weeks, we’re going to talk about the costs of NOT losing the weight. We’re going to talk about time, money, intimacy, and other costs of not moving toward your goal. I’m going to help you decide whether what you’re paying is worth it.

Permanent Weight Loss: Are You Ready? Part 2

Welcome back! I’m so glad you’re here for the second week of Permanent Weight Loss. Over these few weeks, I’m sharing a few absolute requirements that I had to find before I lost my weight. I’ve found that my clients have also been successful with weight loss when they’ve found these things, so I want to share them with you so you can lose your weight for the last time too!

But first, a disclaimer…

 

You might actually not be ready to lose weight. What do I mean, you might not be ready to lose weight? Of course you are, you’re here reading these posts! Not so fast…

Sometimes, you want to lose weight to fit into the dress for the reunion, or to be beach-ready for the summer, or to drop five pounds before your doctor’s check-up. You can absolutely lose that kind of weight. But you know that’s the kind that comes right back, so you’re not really planning to lose weight for good.

That’s not the kind of weight loss I’m talking about. The kind of weight loss I’m talking about is the long game, the one that you keep working until you get to your goal and stay there. It’s the kind that has no timeline and you aren’t in a hurry because you know you’re gonna get there.

You have to decide which one you want. And even though it sounds good to say you’re ready for the long-term, permanent weight loss, sometimes it just isn’t true. You have to tell yourself the truth. Lying to yourself doesn’t do you any good, and it damages your integrity with yourself. If you’re not ready, it’s ok – just be honest and love yourself where you are. You don’t have to lose weight. It really is up to you! When you’re ready, you’ll do it. It is perfectly fine to be where you are in the process. And you’ll have your integrity and self-love intact when you get there.

 

Once you’ve decided that you are done with diet mentality and that you are committed to making real, lasting changes that you design and own, you’re ready for the next step.

 

You have to decide that weight loss is a solvable problem.

 

Some of you don’t quite believe it. You’ve gathered evidence over the years that confirms your thoughts that weight loss (especially permanent weight loss) is impossible. So when I offer you the thought that permanent weight loss is possible for you, you’re not sure it’s true. But to make your weight loss happen, you have to believe that your weight problem can be solved.

 

I’ll never forget that when I really was ready to lose weight, I was also ready to drop the thought that I couldn’t do it. I’d let myself believe that I couldn’t lose weight for years, that it was too hard, that my life was too busy/stressful/overwhelming to ever be successful at losing weight. That thinking was in the background. I wasn’t even really aware that I was thinking that. When I really decided that I was done and this problem had to be fixed, the next step was to believe that I could do it. So I started gathering evidence that I could solve hard problems. When I looked for proof that I could do it, I decided that if I could accomplish all the other successes in my life and live through the other challenges, then my weight would not be the thing that would defeat me. That shift in mindset was what allowed me to find solutions instead of being unable to see them.

You have to believe that you can solve your weight problem.

Weight Loss vs Diet Mentality

I’m so excited about this week’s post! We’re getting into the real deal around what makes the difference in losing weight for good. There’s so much noise out there around what works for weight loss and it gets confusing, so I want to share what I know about what actually works for permanent weight loss…

 

For many of us, our weight loss journey has been an up-and-down roller coaster kind of experience. We try diet after diet, finding some success in dropping the pounds, but then we go right on back up the scale when we come off the diet. Let me tell you what had to happen before I was successful in losing weight.

 

 

I’d been frustrated by my weight for as long as I could remember, maybe back to the start of puberty. Probably earlier. I’d gotten through college and medical school, started life as a married woman, and had my first baby. When I realized that I was avoiding taking pictures with my baby because I was ashamed of how big I’d gotten, I was angry, frustrated, discouraged, and fed up. This was not going to be my life. It could NOT be that my weight was an obstacle too big to be solved.

I was done.

Like D-O-N-E, done. I wasn’t going to be overweight the rest of my life. I refused to believe that this was my story and I was going to do what I needed to do to change this situation. But how?

I started thinking seriously about how to solve my weight problem for good. No more shiny object syndrome, looking for the next quick fix option to get off the weight. I needed a permanent solution.

One thing was for sure – I was not going to choose some super strict, ratchet diet to live on. I wouldn’t live the rest of my life never being able to have a piece of pizza or slice of birthday cake. No, whatever I did would have to be something I could live with forever. Diets were out.

 

 

That’s the first distinction that has to be made. There is no quick-fix diet that will get you to permanent weight loss. The word diet implies temporary, which works against the long-term permanent weight loss you really want. If you want permanent weight loss, you’ve got to choose a way of eating that will be yours for life. It has to be a plan that you design and that you can live with and enjoy your life.

 

Now let’s be clear: You can choose any style of eating you want for your plan. It might be that you enjoy eating a plant-based style and that you build your plan around that kind of eating. Or you might decide that you feel best with less grain and fewer carbs. You might want to keep seafood but not dairy. Most of us feel better on fewer processed foods. Whatever it is, you have to choose and craft it to fit your life.

I can help you with this. With my lifestyle medicine and holistic nutrition background, we can create any kind of plan you want. But make no mistake, it’s got to be your plan. You get to decide and you own it. You decide where the exceptions fit and when they don’t. No more falling off the plan and then deciding that the diet didn’t work for you – you either work your plan or you don’t.

 

This is where the permanent weight loss actually happens. When you change your mind from a diet mentality to owning your results, you don’t binge because you had a crazy day at work. You don’t eat a sleeve of Oreos because you’re irritated that your kids have broken yet another expensive thing in the house. Your long-term plan trumps the temporary speed bumps in your day.

 

 

Getting to the mindset of permanent weight loss starts with ending diet mentality. It’s not the end of the story, but it’s the beginning. Self-sabotage, mindless eating, triggers – those have to be addressed too.

How To Know If You’re Ready To Lose The Weight

Hello, beautiful! I’m so glad you’re here!

 

Welcome to the beginning of our new series, How To Know If You’re Ready To Lose Weight. Now, if you’ve been following me, you may be thinking, what? That’s what we’re doing, right? I’m a weight loss coach and these blogs have been about weight loss mindset and finding permanent weight loss, so of course, that’s what you’re here for! Actually, not always.

 

 

Why? I’ve spent a lot of years working with women and helping them solve different problems in their lives. Sometimes we’re in a place where we’ve identified a problem, we want it fixed, we are sure that we want the issue handled, we’re not actually ready to do what it takes to solve it. There is often a space between when we figure out what the problem is and when we’re truly ready to deal with it. Sometimes, the work and commitment that we need to deal with the issue aren’t quite there yet.

 

When it comes to weight loss it’s the same thing. You may have spent years trying different diets, jumping in and out of gym memberships, bouncing around different areas of your closet depending on what size you are that season. You might even be so frustrated by your weight that you’ve considered drastic measures like surgery.  Even that doesn’t mean you’re ready to work on permanent weight loss.

 

 

How do I know? You know too – let me show you. You’ve seen people who’ve gotten fed up and desperate enough to have weight loss surgery (not just talk about it – actually have the surgery done). Many of them initially lose weight and then gain much of it back. Many never get down to their goal weight or even to a weight that puts them near a normal BMI. I’ve had many consultations with women who want desperately to lose weight, but when it comes to making the decision to commit to themselves, they stop short.

What stops them? Sometimes it’s being stuck in diet mentality, thinking that what they really need is to just find the one magical eating plan that will work for them, as if there is a combination or code or series of lottery numbers that will cause the weight to come off once they find them. Sometimes it’s not being ready to prioritize this goal because of all the other important things in their life. This work just isn’t important enough to make the space. Sometimes it’s hesitating to invest in themselves – they’re not ready to bet on their success. That looks like not being ready to invest the time or the money it might take to get what they need to be successful. I’ve had women tell me the most compelling stories of their reasons for weight loss stop short at investing in a coaching program even when they want help and believe coaching will help them.

So no, not everyone is ready to commit to doing whatever it takes to lose their weight! And that’s ok. You don’t have to lose weight. You are worthy and lovable no matter what the number on the scale!

How To Get What You Want

Did you know that you can have exactly what you want?

 

 

It is possible! I know it doesn’t always feel that way. We have these goals and dreams and we really want to see them happen, but it feels like we try and try but things don’t change. It’s so discouraging…

But there’s a reason why getting to the new goal is so hard, why it feels like we keep running up against obstacle after obstacle. When we try to lose weight, we start a new diet, make a new plan, clear out the frig and pantry and buy new food. Before we get to successfully implement the plan, we’re off our plan or eating out when we planned not to or making reasons why we don’t need to be SO strict on the plan we set up. Why do we do this?

 

It’s all in your head.

 

 

I mean that literally. Your thoughts are what produce your current result. If you are 50 pounds over your goal weight,  you have been thinking in a way that has created that result. It’s not a judgment – it’s a fact. (Let me make a disclaimer: There’s absolutely no judgment here. You can be whatever weight you choose, and that’s fine. What isn’t ok is when you don’t want the result you have and you feel powerless to change it.)

Most of your thinking is learned and subconscious. You’ve been practicing your thoughts without having to actively think about them, probably for years. You might think it’s normal to have a glass of wine with dinner, or having dessert when you eat out is what everyone does, or eating a snack at 3 pm helps your energy. None of that is true – it’s just thoughts. If you think these routinely, you’re going to drink the wine and eat the dessert and snack. They might be thoughts that lead you to gain weight. At the very least, they are the reason why you have the result of your current weight.

 

If you want to get a different result, you need new thoughts. You learn how new thoughts create the result you want, then you practice that new thought until it becomes your default thinking. Super simple, right? But not super easy. It takes work to change your thinking. You know how when you get a new phone and all the settings are on default, and you have to go through one by one to customize them to your preferences? Your brain is the same way. Learning to be aware of your thoughts, recognizing how those thoughts create your results, and finding new thoughts that help you create what you want is a process. But it can be done!

Weight Loss Stories: Fasting

Fasting. It’s the “new” thing and it seems like everyone has an opinion about it. It used to be that the common advice was to eat every few hours to stimulate the metabolism, and if you went too long between eating occasions that your metabolism would grind to a halt and you’d be doomed to gain weight forever. Ok, I’m being dramatic. But isn’t it interesting how the philosophies behind weight loss can totally contradict each other and still be so popular?

Fasting is in now. And folks either love it or hate it. Some swear that it’s the thing that made weight loss work for them, while others say it made no difference. There’s another group who refuses to try it at all –  waiting an extended period of time to eat is too hard, too intimidating, too painful to try.  Hangry, anyone?

 

 

Whether you love it or hate it, fasting isn’t new. As a spiritual practice, fasting has been around forever. Even as a normal eating pattern, in the 1950s most people didn’t eat after 6 pm dinner to 7 am breakfast (a 13 hour fast). That’s even where the word “breakfast” comes from.

I used to be terrified of fasting. Every time there was a mention of fasting – in the bible, at church, in popular media for weight loss, I resisted the idea. That resistance came from my fear of hunger. I spent most of my life trying to avoid hunger, so much so that when I started looking for hunger to lose weight the sensation was unfamiliar. Still, my mind thought it was something to stay away from. So when I finally allowed hunger to be the reason to eat and I started losing weight, it was a complete overhaul of my thinking around food and all the other reasons I’d learned to eat.

Fasting is a direct challenge to those thoughts. If you want to know what your brain thinks about food, stop eating and tune in. You’ll be able to watch your brain do gymnastics to try to get you to eat! Even more than 14 years after losing my weight, I can still see some of the old patterns of thinking around food come up when I fast. Let me tell you a story…

 

 

Recently I got an email that the church was going to fast on a particular day. Now, I read the email and decided that it was something I wanted to participate in, so I planned to join the fast. It was only one day and the fast from dinner the night before to dinner the day of the fast. I was in the office seeing patients that day, so I packed my water bottle and headed in.

Now, in my office, I have snacks for “emergencies” in my desk drawer. I have Kind bars and small squares of caffeinated chocolates and a container of organic roasted cashews that my nurse gave me for Doctor’s Day. Since I rarely have a food “emergency” the snacks usually just sit there and I give them away if one of my nurses or colleagues is hungry.

It was a busy day as usual. You’d think that I wouldn’t have much time to worry about the fast – but my brain was very busy thinking about the food I’d already decided not to eat. Every time I came back from seeing a few patients to sit at my desk and chart, my brain would suggest that I eat something. A couple of cashews, a square of chocolate, something. But here’s the kicker: I wasn’t actually hungry. The vast majority of the time that my brain offered me a snack as a solution, it wasn’t for hunger. It was to solve irritation, or boredom, or as a reward or a break. I could be sitting down for two minutes to close a chart and my brain would suggest a snack. Once I realized that my mouth was dry because of the mask and what I needed was water – but my brain suggested a snack for that too. It was fascinating to watch how many times my brain would offer food as an option to solve problems that weren’t hunger. Of course, as the day went on, I had more episodes of actual hunger, but most of the times I thought to eat weren’t related to being hungry. Fasting was a great tool to see my mind!

 

 

If you want to see what you really think about food, try fasting. You’ll see all the reasons your mind wants to give you to eat because you say no! The mind will keep trying because of the no. If you pay attention, you can see the mind work even when you’re not fasting, but the fast is a powerful tool to take the distraction of eating food away.

Learning to see the mind at work is a practice, especially if you’ve been eating for reasons other than hunger as most of us have learned to do over the years. Untangling all the reasons why we eat and changing the thinking around them takes work, but it can be done! But if you’ve been trying and struggling, you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to help!
